About this site
Cookie notice
Nothing is stored in your browser unless you accept analytics. Here is exactly what that means.
This site sets no cookies at all unless you accept analytics. There is no advertising, no tracking across other websites, and nothing sold to anyone. Decline and the site works exactly the same.
Cookies on this site
This site is operated by Livetech Ltd (company number 09335110). It is built as static HTML with no logins, no shopping basket and no advertising, so the only cookies it can set are analytics cookies — and those are set only with your consent.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
mr_consent | This site | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, so you are not asked again | Essential | 12 months |
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another | Analytics — consent required | 2 years |
_ga_<ID> | Google Analytics | Maintains session state for this property | Analytics — consent required | 2 years |
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are useful and where readers give up. It records pages viewed, approximate location derived from your IP address, and device and browser type. It does not record your name, your email address, or anything you type.
Nothing loads until you accept. Decline, and the Google Analytics script is never requested and no analytics cookies are set. Google also publishes a browser add-on that blocks Google Analytics across every site, if you would rather not rely on individual sites asking.
What else a page loads
Fonts and stylesheets are served from this site rather than from a content delivery network, so loading a page here does not tell Google, or anyone else, that you visited. That is not a cookie question, but it is the same question underneath — and it is worth saying plainly, because a great many sites that ask politely about cookies have already sent your IP address to three companies before the banner appears.
There is one exception, and we would rather name it than let you find it. A handful of pages carry photographs hosted by Wikimedia Commons, which is where they are published and credited. Those images are loaded from Wikimedia's servers, so your browser makes a request to Wikimedia and Wikimedia sees your IP address. We send no referrer with it, so they are not told which page you were reading, and no cookie is involved. If that matters to you, an image blocker or a content blocker will stop it, and the pages read perfectly well without the pictures.
Changing your mind
Clear this site's cookies in your browser and the stored consent record goes with them, so the banner appears again on your next visit. You can also block or delete cookies wholesale through your browser settings — this site is built to work normally without any.
